PX4 Universal Input: one rack PDU for any power feed

Rack PDU Universal Input: Flexibility Across Power Feeds
Data centre operators often face a significant challenge: managing multiple PDU models across different facilities with varying power infrastructure. Whether your sites use single-phase 32A feeds or three-phase 415V systems, maintaining separate inventory and configurations creates operational complexity and unnecessary costs.
Raritan’s PX4 Universal Input solves this by decoupling the input cord from the PDU itself, allowing a single unit to adapt to any power feed configuration. This modular approach means one PDU can seamlessly connect to different power sources across multiple locations, streamlining procurement, inventory management, and deployment while maintaining full compatibility with your existing infrastructure.
PX4 Universal Input: one rack PDU for any power feed
Raritan’s PX4 rack PDU can be ordered with a Universal Input. The input cord becomes a separate part, so one PDU can connect to a 32A single-phase feed in one room and a 415V three-phase feed in another. Legrand announced it on 26 February 2025.
Normally the power feed decides the PDU. Single-phase 32A at one site, three-phase 415V at another, and each gets its own part number, its own spares shelf and its own purchase order. If the feed changes late, or was never confirmed, the PDU gets reordered.
Universal Input moves that decision to the cord. The PX4 has a keyed connector where a hard-wired cord would normally be. You choose the Legrand Universal Input Cord that matches the feed and plug it in. The PDU reads the cord’s rating and presets its thresholds.
What a universal input rack PDU is
A universal input rack PDU has a detachable input connector instead of a fixed power cord. Interchangeable cords, each with its own plug and current rating, fit the same connector, so the same PDU chassis can be connected to different power feeds.
The practical effect is that the feed and the PDU can be specified separately. The cord is chosen when the feed is known, and it can be changed if the feed changes, subject to the PDU’s own ratings and breakers.
Change the cord, not the PDU
How it works
The connector is keyed and only accepts Legrand Universal Input Cords, so the wrong cord cannot be seated by accident. Raritan says the connector has a small form factor that stays out of the way of the cabling, and the press release adds a 45-degree angled infeed.
Smart Cord is Raritan’s patented function for recognising what has been attached. When the cord is seated, the PDU identifies the plug and cable and presets its thresholds. The aim is that a technician fits the cord and leaves without returning to configure the unit.
Changing a cord on an installed PDU
Raritan’s setup guide has four steps. Power down the PDU and its connected equipment. Leave the PDU in the rack with the equipment connected, and fit the cord that matches the new feed. Attach the cord’s input plug to the main power feed. Power the PDU and its load back up. The swap is quick, but it is not a hot swap.
The cord range
Raritan lists single-phase cords for 200 to 240V at 30 to 63A, three-phase cords for 208V at 30 to 60A, and three-phase cords for 415V at 30 to 32A, in delta and wye. Standard cord length is 3 m. Cords are sold as separate part numbers, and Raritan recommends stocking several.

Raritan notes that the resulting PDU capacity is determined by its nominal ratings and its number of internal circuit breakers. The kVA ranges above describe the cord, not what the PDU can deliver.
Where it helps procurement
Feed not confirmed
Raritan describes enterprise builds that wait for input power details before assembling. With Universal Input the cabinet can be built with the PDU fitted, and the cord added once the feed is final.
Several regions
One PDU can be shipped to any location and paired with a cord that suits the local infrastructure. Raritan says this avoids mixing and matching different PDUs for worldwide installations.
Colocation tenants
Raritan notes that some tenants are billed by plug type and power drawn. A lower-rated cord may cost less, and a higher one can follow if the load grows. Check your own contract first.
The inventory case is the one Raritan states most directly. Instead of single-phase PDUs with several input cords and three-phase PDUs with several input cords, a site can stock one Universal Input PDU and a set of cords. Raritan says this simplifies procurement, inventory and maintenance.
It also bears on PX3 replacement. Raritan’s June 2026 end-of-life notices name PX4 as the successor for many PX3 models, and a PX4 can be ordered with Universal Input. Whether the option is available on a given PX4 model is something to confirm in the Raritan product selector before you specify.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Raritan PX4 Universal Input?
It is an infeed option on newly ordered Raritan PX4 rack PDUs. Instead of a hard-wired input cord, the PDU has a keyed connector that accepts interchangeable Legrand Universal Input Cords, in single-phase or three-phase, delta or wye. Legrand announced it on 26 February 2025.
Which input cords are available?
Raritan lists single-phase cords for 200 to 240V at 30 to 63A, three-phase cords for 208V at 30 to 60A, and three-phase cords for 415V at 30 to 32A. The data sheet carries twelve part numbers, with NEMA and IEC 60309 plugs, and tags each by region: North America, Europe, EMEA and APAC, or worldwide. Two cords are dual-rated.
Can I add Universal Input to a PX4 I already own?
Raritan describes Universal Input as an option on newly ordered PX4 models and does not describe a retrofit. The input connector is keyed to Legrand Universal Input Cords only. If you have installed PX4 units and want this, ask us to confirm with Raritan before assuming it is possible.
How does Smart Cord work?
Raritan says the PDU’s patented Smart Cord function recognises the plug and cable when a cord is attached. The PDU presets its thresholds from that, so a technician can fit the cord and leave without returning to configure the unit.
How do I change the cord on an installed PDU?
Raritan’s setup guide has four steps. Power down the PDU and its connected equipment. Leave the PDU installed with the equipment connected, and fit the Universal Input Cord that matches the new feed. Attach the cord’s input plug to the main power feed. Then power the PDU and its load back up. It is a quick change, but it is not a hot swap.
Does Universal Input suit colocation and multi-site deployments?
Raritan positions it for three cases: hyperscale and enterprise builds where the feed is not confirmed in advance, one PDU shipped to several regions, and colocation tenants. Raritan notes that some colocation tenants are billed by plug type and power drawn, so fitting a lower-rated cord may cost less, and a higher-rated cord can follow later. Whether that applies depends on your colocation contract. The PDU’s capacity follows its own ratings and internal breakers, not the cord alone.
Matching PX4 and cords to your feeds
Enova Technologies is an authorised Raritan partner in Singapore. Send us your site list, the feed type at each and the rack loads. We will match each to a PX4 and a cord set, and quote the spares holding that covers them.
